What does that mean in plain terms? That the Green Card is no longer green, no longer on paper, and you don’t even have to carry it in your car.
As of October 1, a major legislative change has taken effect: insurers no longer have to issue the Green Card (international motor insurance certificate) to their clients, and clients no longer need to have it physically on hand, whether in their car or on their smartphone. So in the event of any insured incident, the police will not ask you for it.
From that date, the so-called digital Green Card comes into effect, which police officers can check if necessary without your assistance, or even remotely, through access to the online database of the Czech Insurers’ Bureau.
But beware! For now, this rule applies only within the Czech Republic. If you travel abroad often, it’s better to keep your Green Card handy. Its digitalization in other EU countries is not planned until the coming years.
